OLD SENNETT CEMETERY |
||||||||||||||
The following photographic inventory project was started in
July of 2005 and completed in June of 2006. In this chart, the NAME and CEMETERY
RECORDS columns represent the cemetery inventory that was originally conducted
and as listed on the website. Any comments or corrections to this inventory
are listed in the COMMENTS column. Locations are
approximations (See Map). The graves are aligned
in rows, but the rows are not completely even and tend to meander and merge
from time to time. The map locations are not meant to be exact survey locations,
only general areas to assist in locating a grave. The entries that are shaded
green indicate that a grave could not be found in the cemetery for that
individual. There are 47 entries so shaded. However, at the end of the chart
is a listing and photos for 41 unidentified graves. There are several other
points of interest:

The NAME and the CEMETERY RECORDS columns represent the cemetery inventory as listed on the website. Any comments or corrections are listed. Locations are approximations (See Map). The cemetery is layed out in rows, but the rows are not completely even. If anyone goes to visit the cemetery, be warned that there are gound nests of hornets in the area of section i1. This photographic inventory is not complete. The last several rows at the back of the cemetery and portions of i1 and i2 are still to be photographed. Also of note: There are obviously missing stones in this cemetery. There are spaces between graves where it appears that there once were stones. In other cases, there is a base, but no stone. There are a number of stones that are so worn that it is impossible to dicepher them. I have placed photos of these at the end of this document. The vast majority of the stones are extremely weathered. | ||||||||||||||

CADY PLOT notes | The Cady plot is at the front of the cemetery and is a prominent feature of the cemetery. There is an old gate (Photo # 79 ). In addition, there are a number of stone posts with rusted rings. At one time there may have been a chain that ran between these posts to define the confines of the plot. Within this plot is a small stone with the letters: EBEN (Photo #27). This is right next to the grave of Grace Cady. It is uncertain who this stone belongs to. Some of the Cady's have individual graves and are also mentioned on the larger family marker. | Cady Plot | 79, 27 |

Bernie: I have a correction for a transcription on the Bowen Family in Old Sennett Cemetery. Bowen, Fred H. born 3-17-1871 and died 1903 Cemetery records list Fred as the son of Hurlon Bowen and Sarah, and the stone lists the parents as H. W. and Laura Bowen. The stone has the correct information, as the parents are Hurlon Bowen (2-17-1843 to 10-30-1879) and Laura "Sarr" Bowen (10-03-1846 to 11-18-1872). Laura is buried in Old Marcellus Village Cemetery, Marcellus, Onondaga County, with her parents William Sarr and Sarah Van Waggoner Sarr.
After Laura's death, Fred was raised by his father and grandmother, Sarah
Merrick Bowen. They last appear on the 1900 Sennett Cayuga County census:
Bowen Sarah born 9-1811 Widowed born Mass The Genealogy of the Merrick--Mirick--Myrick Family of Massachusetts (1636-1902) by George Byron Merrick, also Lists: Pg 250
179. Hurlon (Bowen), son of Spencer and Sarah (Merrick) Bowen, born Feb.
17, 1843, Sennett, N. Y. Married, 1st Nov. 6, 1867, at Marcellus, N. Y.,
Laura Sarr; she born Oct. 3, 1846, at Sennett, N. Y.; died Nov. 18, 1872,
Marcellus, N. Y., leaving one son. Hurlon married, 2nd, Fannie Harper, by
whom he had one son. Hurlon Bowen died Oct. 30, 1879, at Sennett. His widow,
Fannie, resides in Honolulu, Sandwich Islands, where she is matron of the
Queen's Hospital, a position which she has held nearly ten years. Children- ii. Hurlon (Bowen), b. 1877; is an engineer and machinist, having learned his trade with the Union Iron Works, San Francisco, Cal., the company which built the battleship "Oregon," which made the celebrated run from San Francisco to Cuba during the Spanish-American War. He lives with his mother in Honolulu.

Please find the headstone inscription below. My husband is certain of every word but one --CHERIE (French for "dear," which would make sense in this context & which I draw attention to in bold face type.
ESTER
WHAT DO YOU THINK OF CHERIE
