From: TJGenePool [mailto:tjgenepool@comcast.net] Hello Bernie, I’ve been accessing the excellent resources at the Cayuga County NY GenWeb site for a long time—researching five generations of my Flynn ancestors that called Auburn NY home; as well as the Fedigans who are still there! These families intersected at my great grandfather Edward Joseph ‘Eddie’ Flynn, who was the son of Thomas Flynn Jr. and Margaret Fedigan (daughter of Peter & Ann Fedigan). Thank you and the many contributors for this rich source material. I’ve recently tied one of my Irish-born ancestors to a headstone listed in the Cold Springs (State Street or Old Catholic) Cemetery. By the way, which of those names is the accepted, official name for the cemetery?
Michael Flynn was one of Eddie’s uncles and (I’ve recently learned) had a significant naval adventure in the American Civil War. So the notation of “Marine Se.” (1964)/”Marine Service” (1984) now makes perfect sense. I’ve copied a Memorial article below which was published at the time of his death for more background. I’ve reviewed both of the complete inventories on your site, mid-1960s and 1980s versions. Has there been any further discovery or documentation since 1999/2000 when a rehabilitation effort occurred at this cemetery site evidently? Is it possible to make a correction to this inventory, as the date listed for my ancestor is off by a year? I’m also interested in getting a photo of my ancestor’s headstone if possible. Any guidance you can provide will be appreciated. Sincere thanks, Tim Flynn ANOTHER VETERAN GONE.—The death of Michael Flynn is announced in our obituary notices to-day. The deceased, at the breaking out of the war was in New Orleans, where he was thrown into prison for refusing to join the Confederate army. On his release he came north and entered the navy. He was one of the crew of the Keokuk, which vessel was sunk in Charleston harbor, and was one of the three saved out of a crew of ten, the rest going down with the vessel. He was afterward transferred to the New Hampshire, and drew $500 in prize money for the year. After the war he returned to this city, having made an honorable record, and was made a member of the police force, afterward holding a position on the prison, until the failure of his health.
