A RECORD OF THE PROCEEDINGS OF THE FIRST CONGREGATIONAL SOCIETY OF BRUTUS
(Beginning September 3, 1805)
A number of the inhabitants of the Town of Brutus and its vicinity assembled themselves at the home of Thomas Wright on the third Tuesday of September in the year of our Lord one thousand Eight hundred and five for the purpose of consulting on proper measures for forming themselves into a Religious Society and made choice of Mr. Joseph Hamilton as Moderator of the meeting and Thomas Wright Clerk
Resolved that a meeting be notified and appointed at the house of Thomas Wright on the second Tuesday of November next for the purpose of forming a Society and Electing Trustees.
Agreeable to Public Notice previously given a meeting was held at the house of Thomas Wright on Tuesday the 17th day of November in the year of our Lord one thousand Eight hundred and five for the purpose of forming a Religious Society.
Voted Mr. Joseph Hamilton Moderator and Thos. Wright Clerk of sd (said) meeting.
Resolved that this meeting form a Society to be known and distinguished by
the title of the First Congregational Society of Brutus.

Resolved that the Society be Incorporated agreable to the act of the legislature of the State of New York Entitled an Act to provide Incorporation of Religious Societies.
A meeting of the Trustees of the first Congregational Society of Brutus was held on the third day of December 1805 at the house of Thomas Wright.

Voted that Thomas Wright serve a Clerk for Society.
That Mr. Jacob Sheldon serve as Treasurer.
Resolved that the Common Seal of this Society shall be the Eagle side of a ten cent piece of the United States Coin.
Resolved that the Trustees of the Society shall be collectors for one year.
A Meeting of the First Congregational Society of Brutus was held on the 31st day of December 1805 at the house of Mr. Daniel Sheldon for the purpose of consulting and agreeing on further measures for hiring the Reverend Francis Pomeroy to take the Pastoral charge of said Society as their preacher.

Resolved that this Society consider it necessary and proper for the Trustees to give a Call in writing to the Reverend Francis Pomeroy and Request that his Settlement commence on the first day of January in the year 1806.
Resolved that the Trustees give the call immediately agreable to the above votes.
On hearing the proposals of said minister it was voted by said meeting that this Society shall pay by subscription the sum of three hundred and twenty dollars to that sum in each year thereafter until it shall amount to four hundred dollars and to pay that sum anually thereafter so long as he shall remain their minister and Likewise to furnish their minister with firewood sufficient for two fires if Required for the space of Eight years or until his sallary shall amount to four hundred dollars.
Resolved that the Sabbath day meeting be held at the following places: viz.
On the first Sabbath after the New Year at the house of Mr. James Hamilton
On the second Sabbath after the New Year at the house of Capt. James Wilson
On the third Sabbath at the house of Mr. James Sheldon and
On the fourth Sabbath at the house of Mr. Frederick Kellogg and to continue the same place in rotation for one year.
Resolved that the meeting be adjourned and to meet again on the second Tuesday in January next at 1 O. Clock at this place.
January 14th 1806. A meeting was opened agreeable to an adjournment at the house of Mr. Daniel Sheldon.

1806 January 21st . Pursuant to an adjournment a meeting of the first Congregational Society of Brutus was opened at the house of Mr. Daniel Sheldon.

The reverend Francis Pomeroy having made it known the he accepted the call and proposals of said Society it was Resolved that he be Ordained as their Minister.
Resolved that we appoint Wednesday the Seventh day of May next for the Ordination of Mr. Pomeroy to the pastoral charge of said Society.
Resolved that said ordination be held at the house of Mr. Jacob Sheldon in Brutus.

The Annual Meeting of the First Congregational Society of Brutus Met at the House of Moses Robinson the 11th Day of Nov. 1815.

Resolved as the Sense of this Meeting that the first Congregational and the first Presbyterian Societys unite and become as they Orginally were. Adjuorned to the 25th _____ at the House of Rev. J. Pools.

In Lieu of Elias Cady and John Hamilton whose Seats became vacant on this Day. John Hamilton appointed a Delegate to wate on Mr Pool to inform him that this Society cannot support him.

At a meeting of the first Congregational Society in Brutus holden at their Meeting House on the 22 Day of December 1825. Hezekiah Webster was chosen Moderator and Sylvester Willard appointed Clerk. The Meeting then adjournment to the house of Orren Hastings.
Voted unanimously that Daniel Sheldon be appointed Trusstee in the _____ of Aaron B. Sheldon whose term had expired.
Resolved that all the Monies now due to this Society be appropriated toward the payment of a society note now in the hand of Pearl Douglass.
The Meeting then adjourned till the third Monday in December next.

Voted that Cephas Sheldon be Trustee in the place of Hezekiah Webster whose term has expired.
Voted that Daniel Sheldon 2nd be a Trustee in the place of Elias Cady who resigned his office of trustee that otherwise would become vacant one year from this date.
Voted that Elias Cady, Hezekiah Webster, William Bassett, Cephas Sheldon, and Chester Treat be appointed to meet with the Society Clerk and insert into the records of this Society all such proceedings as have been omited ___ mistake on the otherwise and which they may be able to Supply from their recollection.

December 22nd 1826 the aforesaid Committee Met pursuant to appointment at the Inn of William Stevenson and from the best of their recollection produced the following transactions of the Society which had been omited to be recorded at the times of being transacted.
In January 1823 the Presbytery met at this place and dismissed Reverend Jephtha Pool. This Society being unable to Support him any longer.
May 1st 1824. Rev. Charles Yale was called to preach for this Society one year for so Much as the Society could raise by Subscription. The Society raised three hundred dollars.
Dec 25th 1825. The Society having omited their Annual Meeting and their appointment of Trustees. The Charter became vacated and was again renewed by legal Application to the County Clerk and the Charter received bearing date January 17th 1825 was recorded in the Clerks Office of the County of Cayuga in book A of records of Religious Societies page 88th at 11 Oclock A.M. by M. S. Myers Deputy Clerk.
January 1825 the Society Met at Peter Douglass and voted to divide the Society one part fo which were to be located at Weeds Port and called the first Presbyterian Society in Brutus.
May 1st 1825. Rev. Charles Yale was invited to preach the Second year for which he was to receive as Much as could be raised by Subscription. The Subscription Amounted to two hundred and three dollars in Cash and Eighty Dollars in provisions.
After preaching Six months Accusations were Alledged against him of Suspicions and flagrant a Nature as ultimate in his dismissal from us and Expulsion from the Sacred office of the Ministry. Dec. 13th 1825.
May 1826. Rev. A. K. Buel was called to preach one year for which he had Three hundred Dollars Subscribed and promise of an Application being made to the A. H. M. S. at Geneva for the Additional Sum of one hundred Dollars.

At a regular Society Meeting holden at that house of Henry Fellows on the Seventeenth of November 1827 the Rev. Abner Morse was engaged to peach for one year commencing the ____ Sabbath in ___.
The Society agreed to give him three hundred dollars with confident expectation that additional dollars would be given him by the A. H. M. S. but at some time voting him the privileges of preaching as a Missionary in other places as long a portion of the time as the Sum which he should fail of receiving (less them one hundred dollars) from the A. H. M. S.base to the ?hundred dollars.
On Monday evening Nov. 26th a Society Meeting was held at Ira Loomis when it was seriously urged that the vote passed at the last Society Meeting allowing Mr. Morse the priviledge of being absent a portion of the time under the circumstances Mentioned might furnish a pretext for anyone in the Society to object to pay their Subscription because they signed under the exp_____ of his preaching here one year as stipulated in the caption to the Subscription. After discussing the Subject a committee of the following persons were appointed to call on Mr. Morse and State the difficulty.

The result of the communication was that if necessity should require him to be absent a portion of the time agreeable to the liberty given him by a vote of the Society and any person taking advantage of it should refuse to pay his subscriptions, he would be engage to loose it and not hold the Trustees liable for the Same.

Voted that any of the Members of this Society shall have a right to build horse sheds on the South and West line of the Society ground near the Meeting house.
Voted that the sheds now building by Luther Bassett and Elias Cady Shall be prised at ten Dollars each and if any person bids higher than the Sum, the overplus shall be deposited in the Societies fund for the benefit of the Society.

Hezekiah Webster was appointed Moderator. Sylvester Willard was Chosen Society Clerk and Jacob Sheldon was chosen Trustee for the year ensuing.
At the Annual Meeting of the Congregational Society in Sennett at their Meeting House pursuant to public notice for the purpose of appointing officers for the ensuing year holden January 9th 1833.
Cephas Sheldon was chosen Moderator. Heiman Treat was appointed Trustee in the place of Chester Treat whose term expired.
Sylvester Willard was chosen Societies Clerk.
On motion resolved that any member of the Society shall be privileged to build sheds on the boundaries of th Societies lot provided they do not place them in a situation to interfere in any way with the use of those which are now built.
See the doings of the Society at a meeting holden Jan. 24th 1828.
The following was omited to be recorded in its place.
Rev. Henry Boynton was engaged by the Society for one year commencing 1882 for which he was to receive three hundred dollars and cords of wood together with what sum could be received by application to the A. H. M. S.

Rev. H. Boynton s Year having expired was unanimously desired to continue his services another year for which he agreed to accept of three hundred and forty dollars without making any application to the A. H. M. S. The Society not knowing how much they were able to raise did not give him a definite answer but agreed to make the effort.

3. Choose Harry Ball Trustee in place of Richard Casmer who refused to Serve.
4. Choose John Wheeler in place of Philo Sheldon whose time expires.
