Hi Bernie,
Today was a sad day for the members of the Montezuma Methodist Church, as they held their final service today June 15, 2008. The Methodist Church was the last surviving church of Montezuma and everything is scheduled for removal, including all pews before the end of this month.

I had a pleasant visit with one of the church members today and she informs me that all the records will be transferred to the Methodist Church at South Butler NY after 6/30/2008.

In reviewing what they have, I was surprised that most of the original records has in fact survived the fire of 1945. They had records going back to the 1820's belonging to the Fosterville Church. There is one book missing, a book of entries during the Pastorship of W.W. Kehler in the 1930's and there is a reference that these entries were in a "book that was falling apart". However, it is not known yet if this book was lost in the 1945 fire or if it could be tucked away in one of the cabinets.

I took a few pictures of the inside of the church and would like to ask they be posted to the Cayuga Genweb Site, as it is likely the building will now be sold for private use. The photos will at least preserve the last and final church of Montezuma.

Again, anyone that desires information from these books will have to contact the South Butler Methodist Church after 6/30/2008.

Thank you,
Dawn Roe
Port Byron
