RECORD OF SLAVES IN SCIPIO

PAGE ONE
I Glen Cuyler of Scipio and County of Cayuga and State of New York
do certify that I am the owner and proprietor of a certain female slave named
Mary and the said Mary was delivered of a male child on the tenth
day of October last past named Harry. I therefore request a registry
thereof to be made by the Clerk of the Town aforesaid agreeable to the statues
in such case made and forwarded.
Dated at Scipio this 14th December 1803. Glen Cuyler.
I John Fleming of the town of Scipio in the county of Cayuga do hereby
certify that Ebon (?) Maryland a male slave of mine was born in the
town of Scipio aforesaid on the fourth day of September in the year of our
Lord one thousand eight hundred and six, and that Peter another male slave
of mine was born in the aforesaid town on the second day of April in the
year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and seven.

These are to certify that on the 15th of September last a female negro child
was born of a negro woman slave of mine its name is Esther.

born of a negro woman slave belonging to me on the night of the 31st of March
1809. Likewise one female named Siner (?) born on the 21st of
April of the same year.

We Thomas Lapham and Philip Strong overseers of the poor of
the town of Scipio pursuant to the act entitled "An act concerning slaves
and servants" passed 8th April 1810
Do hereby certify that Glen Cuyler of the town aforesaid has pursuant
to the act aforesaid manumitted a certain female slave by name Mary
of which he the said Glen is the owner and that the said slave appears
to be under the age of fifty years and of sufficient ability to provide for
herself.

of a negro woman slave to me on or about the 26th day of September 1816 and
said childs name is called __________(no name was here!)

Whereas Ezra St. John of Scipio the county of Cayuga wishes to manumit
a female slave by the name of Jane or otherwise called Gin
who was born and has ever been the slave of said Ezra and whereas
the said Ezra wishes to be relieved & secured harmless from all
liability for her further maintainance (sic) & has applied to us overseers
of the poor of the town for the requisite certificate therefore - Therefore
we the said overseers by virtue of the statute in such case made and provided
do hereby certify that we have duly examined the slave aforesaid & that
she appears to be under the age 45 years & of sufficient ability to provide
for herself.

To all whom this may come know ye that by virtue of the second section of
the "act concerning slaves and servants" passed April the 9th 1813 --- I
Ezra St. John of Scipio do hereby manumit my slave Jane otherwise
called Gin giving & granting her her free liberty and freedom
relinquishing forever all claim of right to her servis (sic) and wages
Given under my hand this 17th day of November 1818.

I Jonathan Brownell of the town of Scipio in the county of Cayuga
DO by this instrument in writing make known publish and declare that I have
this day in pursuance of the act entitled an act concerning slaves and servants
passed 9th April 1818 (sic) manumit and set free a certin (sic) male slave
named Charles owned and possessed - aged twenty years December last
past and of sufficient ability to provide for himself
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 3rd day of April
1819.

the above certificate and that he the said Charles appears satisfactorily
to us to be under the age of fifty five years and of sufficient ability to
provide for himself.

Know ye - That by virtue of the second secton (sic) of the act concerning
slaves and servants passed April ninth 1813 I Ezra St. John of Scipio
do hereby manumit my slave Jack age twenty-four years last August
giving and granting him perfect liberty and freedom and relinquishing forever
all right and claim to his future services (sic) wages and property ---
Given under my hand at Scipio in the County of Cayuga and State of New York
this twenty third day of March Eighteen hundred twenty one.

Know all men by these presents that I Charles H. Morrell of the Town
of Scipio, in the County of Cayuga and State of New York do hereby manumit
my slave David now of the age of twenty one years pursuant to the
statue (sic) in such case made and provided.
In writing whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal the sixteenth day
of November in the year of our Lord Eighteen hundred and twenty -----

manumitted by the said Administrators appears to be under the age of forty
five years & of sufficient ability to provide for herself.
