SOME WORDEN BABCOCK FAMILY RESEARCH
This website page contains genealogy research related to Worden Babcock and Babcock Family Cemetery in Scipio NY. |
In the early to mid-1960s, two local historians, together with the Owasco chapter D.A.R. and members of the local Pomona Grange Chapter, compiled a countywide roster of cemetery burials within Cayuga County NY. The resulting list of cemeteries included early rural family cemeteries with names and dates compiled primarily from headstone transcriptions. This list shows the existance of a small family burial plot in Scipio NY known as: Babcock Family Cemetery. The list of burials for this cemetery, as it appears within the 1960s countywide cemetery burial inventory, was apparently copied from an earlier inventory of cemetery burials compiled by Frank A. & Clara Skilton. Mr. Skilton was an attorney & businessman who devoted the last 30-years of his life to conducting historical and genealogical research. Mr. Skilton
died on 6 January 1931 and some of his historical research records and those of his wife,Clara Maria Gilbert Skilton included tombstone inscriptions from graves in more than eighty Cayuga County, New York, cemeteries. These 'Skilton' research records now reside at the Division of Rare and Manuscript Collections;
2B Carl A. Kroch Library at Cornell University - Skilton Family Papers, Collection Number: 1273.
Among the listing of burials for Babcock Family Cemetery is: Babcock, Worden - died Feb. 24, 1851 ae 79y 11mo 22da. This would suggest that he was born about March 2, 1771. The 1850 Federal Census cites that Worden Babcock was born in Massachusetts. A transcription of a death notice for Worden Babcock as published in the: "Christian Ambassador, Auburn NY, - "Sat. 15 Mar 1851" can be found on the Internet via a website for the New York State Convention Of Universalists . This death notice cites: In Scipio, N.Y., Feb. 24th, 1851, Mr. WORDEN BABCOCK, aged 79 years, 11 months and 24 days". You can view this death notice on their website by clicking HERE |
A transcription of records titled: "Massachusetts, Compiled Marriages, 1633-1850", as found on Family History Library Film # 1993939, cites that two people named 'Worden & Elizabeth Babcock' were married on 14 Feb. 1793 (Valentine's Day) in New Bedford, Bristol County, Massachusetts. The same information is cited on a compiled transcription of Massachusetts Vital and Town Records as found on the website: ancestry.com. |

Published information about the early history of the Village of Aurora in Cayuga County NY, suggests that Worden Babcock was an Ensign during the War of 1812. From the book: AURORA - “Village of Constant Dawn” - A BRIEF HISTORY OF AURORA, NY - WRITTEN BY TEMPLE RICE HOLLCROFT FOR THE Wells College Alumnae News 1950 - 1958. ~
"In addition to the young men who enlisted or were drafted, older men, exempt from service because of age, often formed companies. At least one such company was raised in Aurora and vicinity largely through the efforts of Jonathan Richmond, then in his 49th year. It received the following authorization from Governor Daniel D. Tompkins, Commander in Chief of New York State troops.
General Orders: Headquarters, Albany, Nov. 11th, 1812 -
Whereas a number of persons, inhabitants of the town of Scipio in the County of Cayuga, exempt from military duty, have associated themselves together and formed a company, pursuant to the 35th section of the militia Law of this State; Now, therefore, the Commander in Chief, in pursuance of the authority vested in him by the said law, does hereby organize the said association as a company of Infantry and assigns and brevets one Captain, two Lieutenants, and one Ensign for said company, viz.: Jonathan Richmond for Captain, Elisha Durkee [now more than fifty years old] for First Lieutenant, Nathan Webster for Second Lieutenant, and Worden Babcock for Ensign, and directs that they be obeyed and respected accordingly."
Based on the above information, Worden Babcock may have served in the NY State Militia during the War of 1812. Pursuant to a request dated May 2, 2017; the New York State Archives was UNABLE to locate any War of 1812 payroll cards or veterans claims records for Worden Babcock. Also, the National Archives does not have a War Of 1812 military service record or pension records for Worden Babcock. |
The year 1816 is known as: THE YEAR WITHOUT A SUMMER. In the Spring and Summer of 1816, a persistent "dry fog" was observed in parts of the eastern U.S. Evidence suggests that this anomaly was predominantly a volcanic winter event caused by the massive 1815 eruption of Mount Tambora. Some areas in Central NY saw frost in May, June and August. The event caused severe crop damage and food was scarse. Based on apparent gravestone transcriptions, the first wife of Worden Babcock, (Elizabeth) died the following year on 30 October 1817. It appears that Elizabeth Babcock may have been the first person buried on the family farm. |
Some History From The Scipio NY Neighborhood... In The Early Decades Of The 1800s ... Jethro Wood spent his adult life in Cayuga County, New York, and resided in the larger Town of Scipio NY (prior to the Town of Venice being split off from Scipio in 1823). Jethro Wood invented the first commercially successful iron moldboard plow. This plow revolutionized American Agriculture. Wood received a patent on an initial version of his cast-iron moldboard plow in 1814, and patented improvements on that plow in 1819. The Jethro Wood House, Wood's residence in the Hamlet of Poplar Ridge, New York was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1964. Today, the Hamlet of Poplar Ridge NY is located within the Town of Venice, a few miles southwest of the former Worden Babcock farm. |

The meeting was held at the school-house near Bishop's tavern at Scipio Center, NY. On November 11th, 1837, it was decided to build a meeting house of wood, and Worden Babcock and others were on a comittee to raise funds to build with. Some More History From The Scipio NY Neighborhood In The Early-Mid Decades Of The 1800s ... In 1837 Slocum Howland built a STORE in the nearby hamlet of Sherwood NY (within the Town of Scipio NY), just a few miles southwest of Worden Babcock's farm. This original cobblestone store is now Howland Stone Store Museum. Their museum collection details the sale of local products such as wool and pork, and importation of manufactured products. It is very possible that Worden Babcock's family visited this store. The Howland family was prominent in important reform movements throughout the nineteenth and early twentieth century, particularly in the abolition of slavery, education, and women's suffrage. Both Emily Howland and her niece, Isabel (1859-1942), were active in the local, state and national women's suffrage movements and the museum has a large collection of Posters related to Suffrage. A prized Museum possession is an 'Underground Railroad Pass' brought by two slaves who escaped from Maryland and came to Slocum Howland seeking freedom in 1840. Miss Emily Howland (1827-1929) first taught in schools for free blacks in Washington, D.C. in 1857. In addition to building a school in Sherwood, she founded and/or financially supported fifty schools for the emancipated blacks, teaching in several of them. |
