Note: These burial records were originally compiled in the early 1960's as part of a project by Local Historians and Members of the Owasco, NY Chapter of the D.A.R. The 1960s countywide cemetery burial inventory was often just a transcription of names & dates found on legible headstones. Thus, the listings may not include any burials after about 1964. There also may be additional burial or record information not cited on this website page because headstones were missing, not legible or records could not be found. Copies of the burial listings found on this website page came from the 1960s Cayuga County NY cemetery burial roster project and were obtained courtesy of the Cayuga County NY Historian's Office. | |||||||||||||||

----- Original Message ----- From: Michael J. Walawender To: cayuga@roadrunner.com Sent: Wednesday, August 22, 2001 5:50 PM Subject: thanks with corrections Hi This is a marvelous web site and I really appreciate the effort and care that have gone into it. I would like to offer a few corrections to the listing in the St. Nicholas Russian Orthodox Cemetery at Half Acre. Most of my family is buried there. My parents were Adam and Julia Walawender. My mother is listed but not my father and I hope that you can correct this oversight. He (Adam Stanley Walawender) died 7/28/87 and is interred next to my mother. Also, I found that my grandfather's name is misspelled. He is listed as Adam Malvyak and the correct spelling is Matviak. His first wife Anna is listed as Annie Matryak but the appropriate spelling is Anna Matviak. Mary Matviak, who died in 1975, was his second wife. Thank you again for putting all this together. To: 'Bernie Corcoran' Sent: Saturday, September 19, 2009 6:47 PM Subject: RE: Stepanick corrections at St Nicholas Cemetery Hi Bernie, I am writing to make note of some corrections. It concerns the graves for STEPANIUK. REGARDING STEPANICK (STEPANIUK) First, the names listed as Stepanick should be spelled STEPANIUK as they are written on the gravestones. However, the name is usually pronounced Ste-fan-ik, all short vowels. The names should read as follows. Stepaniuk, Thomas Stepaniuk, Chester Stepaniuk, Barbara Senek (maiden name) Thomas and Barbara Stepaniuk were husband and wife. Chester was their son. All three of them immigrated to the USA from Poland (Austria when they came over). They arrived at Ellis Island and settled in Michigan. In the early 1930s the family moved to a farm in Union Springs, NY. The ages for these two are approximate. Thomas death was most likely 9 July 1944, based on newspaper articles and family information. Chesters original name was Dymitry. Thus, the C D Stepaniuk on his grave. His wife Katherine (nee Kuzina) is not buried next to him. She remarried Richard Bishop. She is interred at St. Josephs Cemetery in Fleming, NY. Katherine emigrated from Poland as a baby. Chester and Katherine became citizens in February 1943. Peter Stepaniuk was the son of Chester and Katherine Stepaniuk. His wife was Nancy Stepaniuk (nee Wheeling). Michael Stepanick, Anna Stefanak, and Susan Stefanak do not seem to be related to the other families as far as I can tell. REGARDING SENEK Peer Senek is corrected to PETER SENEK. He died in a fire in Auburn in January 1950. Peter Senek immigrated to the USA from Poland. He was the brother of Barbara Stepaniuk (nee Senek). REGARDING SENEK
You may find photos of these people at this URL. Look in the Stepaniuk Family
