Cemetery On Former Minor or Miner JONES Farm
(Located on a former 50-Acre farm lot near the northwest intersection of Split Rock Road & Old Salt Road in the Town of Niles NY)
MINOR JONES of Stephentown (Renselaer County) NY purchased 50-Acres within the former Cayuga County NY Town of Semponius (lot 11) on 8 Feb. 1805 for $350 via an Indenture recorded in Deed-Book “F” at pages 319 & 320. This 50-Acre lot was 1,475.76-Ft square. Today, it is located near the northwest intersection of Split Rock Road & Old Salt Road in the Town of Niles NY.
MINER & SUSANNAH JONES subsequently sold the above referenced 50-Acres on 9 May 1827 via an Indenture recorded in Deed-Book “NN” at Page 38).
Between the time when Minor/Miner JONES purchased the 50-Acres in 1805 and subsequently sold the same land in 1827, the deed description was revised to reserve a small “burying ground” lot. The burying ground is described as being square-shaped and 3-Rods or 49.5-Ft long on each side. Unfortunately, the parcel boundary description contained within the 1827 deed doesn't specify exactly where the burying ground is located or who is buried there.
Thus, based on early deeds, there is likely a small burying ground (cemetery) located somewhere within a former 50-Acre lot near the northwest intersection of Split Rock Road & Old Salt Road in Niles NY. Early deeds suggest that this may have been a small family cemetery that was established on the former Minor/Miner JONES Farm between 1805 and 1827. This “Burying Ground” was NOT listed within the Cayuga County NY countywide roster of cemetery records and gravestone transcriptions compiled by local historians and the D.A.R. in the early 1960s.
