In August 2017, a 'GO-FUND-ME-PAGE' was established to seek donations for the restoration of Babcock Family Cemetery in Scipio NY.

Babcock Family Cemetery was established on a small portion of farm land that was purchased by Worden Babcock in 1806 (Deed “G-491). After the death of Worden Babcock’s 1st wife (Elizabeth) in circa 1817, it appears that she may have been the first person buried on the family farm.

When Worden Babcock composed his ‘Last Will & Testament’ in 1848, he stipulated as follows: “I hereby will and direct that the burying ground on my farm in the Town of Scipio, in the sale of my said real estate, to reserve the same and I also direct that the same be and remain for the use and purpose of a family burying ground for such of my said family and connexious(?) as choose to use the same for that purpose” (Surrogate/Probate Office Will Bk. I at Pg. 440 thru 446).

After the death of Worden Babcock in 1851, the Executors of his estate sold his farm land with this stipulation in the conveyance: "Provided always that the burying ground situated on the above described premises is NOT included in the above sale" (Deed 87-169).

ABOUT THE ABOVE CEMETERY BURIAL LIST: In the early to mid-1960s, two local Historians (Mable Crosby and Flora B. Daniells) worked together with the Owasco Chapter D.A.R. and the Pomona Grange to compile a listing of early cemetery burials within Cayuga County NY.  When this countywide cemetery burial inventory project was completed in about 1966, they privately printed a very limited number of complete 10-Volume Sets.  One copy of the complete set of 10-Volume cemetery burial record books, can be found at the Local History Center Room at Seymour Public Library in Auburn NY. The cemetery burials shown on this website page were copied from the Babcock Family Cemetery burials as found in these books. Note that the above list of burials includes a notation that cites "Skiltons Records". Consequently, the list of burials for this cemetery, as it appears within the circa 1966 countywide cemetery burial inventory, may have been copied from an earlier inventory of cemetery burials within Babcock Family Cemetery as compiled by Frank A. & Clara Skilton. The research records compiled by Frank & Clara Skilton include cemetery records or headstone transcriptions for over eighty Cayuga County Cemeteries.
