ST. JOSEPH'S CATHOLIC CEMETERY
( Town Of Brutus )

( Note: There is also another cemetery in Cayuga County with the name "St. Joseph's  Catholic Cemetery" located in the Town of Fleming )

St. Joseph's Cemetery  (Brutus) is located on Oakland Road about one-half mile northwest of the village of Weedsport. The original land purchase of six acres was negotiated in October of 1883. Bishop Bernard J. McQuaid of Rochester consecrated the cemetery on September 5, 1884. Some years ago the area was increased by the purchase of about seven acres adjouing the original property on the north. St. Joseph's was the first Catholic cemetery in Cayuga County, north of Auburn. It was established and incorporated as an independent organization to serve the needs, not only of the Weedsport parish, but the parishes of Cato, Montezuma and Port Byron as well. However, within recent years, fewer burials have occurred from the neighboring parishes because cemeteries have been established locally. Lots are laid out in "tiers" which run in a north-south direction. The tiers are numbered from the west toward the east. Names in the text are listed as the burials occur in each tier, beginning at the lower or south side of the cemetery and moving northward. A complete and accurate Grave Register of the St. Joseph's has been kept since 1921. Burial data predating 1921 came mainly from a tombstone survey, family records and statements of Louis Stivers who served as sexton of the cemetery from 1903 until his death in 1957. Many thanks are due Rev. Leo A. Jones, Pastor of St. Joseph's Church in Weedsport, for his suggestions and for his kindness in permitting free access to official cemetery records. Howard J. Finley August 15, 1959 Burials in St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery Weedsport, N.Y. 1884-1959
