TREE TALKS Vol. 13, No. 2, June 1973 | Society Page 5
To a casual cemetery visitor the stone does not appear unusual, since the death date matches the style of the marker. Only a close look at some nearby stones gives a hint that something is amiss. These older markers record the burial of the children of Caroline and Ozias WRIGHT who died as infants in the years around 1820. Caroline's tombstone mis-information comes to light when you start to unravel how a mother of small children in 1820, could only be 31 years old at her death in 1862. But six errors in 10 lines of work! Certainly a monument to a day when almost everything went wrong. Other experiences with tombstone information are recounted by CNYGS member Mrs. Laurence D. TANNER (T4) Scipio Center, N.Y., 13147 .
Is That Tombstone Inscription Correct?
Too often the amatuer (sic) genealogist accepts only one type of record as final proof. This can apply if record is found locally or several states away after a long trip to the old family cemetery plot, for instance. The amateur is elated to have found the "proof" for the family records or genealogy. However the experienced researcher learns to seek out various records for further proof, if at all possible. For examply my research for my MANROW - TREAT records serves to substantiate this theory. Sometime ago I was first given the grave stone record for Moses TREAT by a friend, now deceased, to read: "Died 7 June 1848 ae 72". This stone is in Pine Hill Cemetery, Throop, N.Y. Later a trip to the cemetery revealed the following:Deacon Moses Treat died(June 7)1843 aged 72 years. Next I checked at the Cayuga County Surrogate's Court and found Moses TREAT's will was recorded BK. F 171 in the year 1843. Thus I concluded that 1843 was the correct date as given on the tombstone. The friend had evidently read 1843 as 1848, confusing the 3 and 8 figures; but a rubbing of the stone leaves no doubt but that 1843 is correct. Moses TREAT records are to be found in the TREAT and BUCKLEY genealogies and gives 1771 as year of birth. Therefore Moses would have been 72 at age of death in 1843, thus making one more reason to accept the 1843 grave stone data as correct.
