The Old Homestead or Howland Cemetery
(Town of Ledyard- Cayuga County, NY) #94
This cemetery is located near the junction of the Poplar Ridge Rd. and the Angling Rd. in the town of Ledyard NY. Cemetery extends to the Dog Corners Rd. This entire plot covers two acres , the walled plot 1/4 acre. Information from the circa-early-1960s countywide cemetery burial roster project (Volume 5) cite that the area is bounded by a gully on the south side and by a woven wire fence in fair condition on the west and north sides. Most of the fence on the east side has been moved , apparently on account of road widening. There are vehicle entrances with iron gates at both the east and west entrances. The gate posts is down at the west gate , there is an iron gate for pedestrians at the east end , which is blocked by a locust tree. A rough stone will enclose the 1/4 acre area where burials have been made. There is an iron gate at the entrance to this plot. A limestone hitching post stands near this entrance. There are 26 Norway Spruce trees and 3 Elms and 1 white Cedar , in or around the larger area. These trees appear to be more than 100 years old . A smaller part has been greatly improved during the past two years by cutting the brush , smoothing and lawn mowing. The cover is now mostly myrtle and Lily of the Valley.
Notes from the circa early-1960s countywide cemetery burial roster project also cite that: In circa 1963 a cemetery caretaker was employed by the National Bank of Auburn , which had custody of the trust fund. Repairs apparently needed. Repairs of fence at east end , new gate post at west end , painting of iron gates , a few stones need repairs or resetting. The GOULD FAMILY plot is enclosed by a fence of iron bars and limestone posts. within the enclosure are eight limestone Sarooph-aguses which are examples of beautiful craftsmanship. The inscriptions are in perfect condition . They are not cut into the stone , but were cut out of the stone so that the letters were above the surface of the tomb.
